How much does it cost to buy two eyes?
Updated: January 30, 2007

Thank you for visiting Joshua's website. Joshua Cooper Goldenberg was born January 24, 2004 blind, and missing his right eye. He has an incredible big sister named Hannah, and two determined parents; Evan and Christie. Known as Bi-lateral Micropthalmia, his right eye never developed and his left eye was abnormally small. At about 14 months old, his left eye died due to Glaucoma and subsequently had to be removed leaving him with no eyes. Our insurance company, Blue Cross, told us that his prosthetic eyes and conformers were considered "Durable Medical Equipment." Durable Medical equipment, or DME, is usually for things like oxygen tanks and walkers, but prosthetics? Needless to say, the costs of conformers, new prosthetic eyes and out of pocket expenses for surgeries and transportation left us with nothing but debt.

We began a campaign to raise money for his medical bills by selling donated items on EBay and the four of us cannot put into mere words how wonderful everyone has been. We have been able to make new, lifelong friends as well as hear stories from other people around the world who have endured their own trials along with us. Because of the prayers and love we have received throughout our journey, Joshua is now thriving both at home and in pre-school. Our donation drive lasted about a year and was a success. We were able to raise enough money to help pay for his eyes and surgeries and even had some left over to give back to other people in need.

Currently, we are battling the beaurocracy of the school districts and what is best for our son but we know with hard work we will succeed.

We would like to send out a special thank you to a dear friend of ours Lori Foster. Lori, you have shown us that true joy and happiness can actually exist in desperate times. We never knew that the heart of a stranger could bring such love into our family. Thank You!
